My Story
My name is Matthew Pitts. I'd like to tell you a bit about myself as an artist, and a person. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that continuous choice truly shapes all aspects of my life. I grew up a member of the Church and was blessed with a mother of Pioneer stock and a convert father. I served a mission in the Venezuela, Maracaibo Mission and attended BYU for my undergraduate degree. I am married to my wife, Jaime, and we have four sons.
Over the years, as a family, we've moved around quite a bit for school and work - like a military family, but without the amazing benefits. We've lived in Jerusalem, where I attended the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and later in New York City for law school, where two of our boys were born. Next it was on to Southern California, and then across the map to Rhode Island. I counted once. I've done the cross-country drive 17 times. Finally, we landed back in Utah where both Jaime and I grew up. The Beehive State looked a little different, but it still felt like coming home.
I studied Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies at BYU. Later I attended law school at Yeshiva University. While attending Yeshiva I studied Jewish law extensively, and ultimately earned a Master's Degree in Jewish History, along with my law degree. I then enrolled at the Claremont Graduate University, where I began doctoral studies in the History of Christianity and Religions of North America. I also participated in the Mormon Studies program while at Claremont.
As a graduate Student I began teaching at California State University at Fullerton, where I teach the History and Development of Jewish Thought, Intro to Judaism, and Intro to World Religions. I have taught at Cal State Fullerton now for eleven years. During that time, I also taught for a year at BYU in the Religion Department. I also work as an attorney here in Utah.
As I said, I've been a member of the Church my whole life. Put simply, I love the Church. I have been blessed to serve in various capacities, including as a Bishop, Gospel Doctrine teacher, Sunday School President, a counselor in the Elder's quorum presidency, and many others. Currently, I am the Priest's Quorum advisor in my ward.
My Mission
I love God and His Son Jesus Christ. I know that they are real and that they love us in a way that we just can't fathom. My goal in life is to proclaim their names, and to do all I can to ensure that my family and I are together with Them in the Celestial Kingdom. Through Christ's grace, I know it is possible. Truthfully, my music has largely been for this very purpose - to create in myself a more humble and worshipful heart, and to inspire my children to nurture their own relationships with Christ.
I mention the Church, and my love for it, because part of my goal in writing and recording music is to strengthen the Lord's Church. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true. It is God's kingdom on earth, and we, as members have very specific roles and responsibilities from the Lord, through which not only we alone are blessed but all who believe in Christ and call upon His name.
As a song-writer and musician, I hope to extend a hand of brotherhood and fellowship to others through music. I hope to be able to share my songs on a larger scale with fellow members of the Church, and, if there is anything virtuous or lovely within them, I hope that my offerings can help others draw closer to the Savior, and to build up faith in His Church at the same time.
